Lookin’ up
November 26, 2005
Since I can’t squirm around on the ground as easily as another blogger I know, I pointed my camera skyward on my walk the other day. Even at midday the sun hangs low in the sky this time of year at less than 30 degrees altitude, casting long shadows. Not much color looking up, but these old, twisted limbs create interesting patterns against a pale sky.

Dave, which he’s got a crick in his neck.

Got something to say?

Nice shots, Dad! Is that a walnut tree perhaps? In the park?
In shots pointing up like that I tend to get good color in the trunk but the sky tends to get washed out white. Any tips for avoiding that?
Thanks. Yep, it’s a grizzly old walnut tree in Madison park, all scarred from years of fending off lightning strikes. I imagine it as writhing its way through competing branches to reach daylight. I fear it may be close to fighting it’s final battle.
My tip is mostly to get lucky. The problem is the wide contrast range between foreground and sky, The exposure algorithm on my Canon G2 is center-weighted, and usually it does a pretty good job on high contrast scenes. If there is a way of fudging plus or minus on exposure on your camera, you might try underexposing it a bit. But then, what do I know?
