Pride of Baltimore
October 19, 2006
More than two years ago I started construction of Pride of Baltimore II, a 1/64 scale model of a fast sailing schooner of the type known as a Baltimore Clipper. The original Pride ruled the waves from 1805 to 1815, the precursor of the Clipper ship era of the 1850s.
An authentic replica of the original Pride was launched in 1977 and sailed on May 1, 1977, from Baltimore. On May 14, 1986, the Pride of Baltimore was lost at sea along with four crew members. A best-selling book, Pride of the Seaby Tom Waldron tells the story of the Pride’s last voyage and survival at sea.
The keel was laid for Pride II in May of 1987, and she put to sea in 1989.
Here is my version with the hull partly painted.

Got something to say?

Hello Dave,
My name is Dusan Zitny from Slovakia . I was fascinated by your ship model caled Pride of Baltimore II. I am 45 years old and i am ship and plane modeler too. I would like to build a RC model of Pride of Baltimore II but i have not a plane its. I saw a small plane from your page about PoBII from Model Shipyard kit. I have a biggies request on you. Can you give me advise where i be able to obtain this scheme ( plane ) of construction?
To buy the all model PoBII only on account of scheme of construction, it is expensive for me. I am complainsant to buy your scheme of construction if you don’t need it eventually.
Many thank acknowledgments in your apprehension beforehand and i am looking forward to answer.
Dusan, dreamer too.
Hello Dusan,
Thank you for your kind comment. The kit would not be suitable for RC, because it is plank-on-bulkhead construction. The instruction manual references these books as sources of plans and information about the Pride. They may be of some help in searching the Internet.
The Baltimore Clipper, by Howard Chapelle, published by the Marine Research Society. Contains plans and history.
Sailing With Pride, by Greg Pease. Lots of photographs.
Pride of Baltimore, by Thomas Gillmer. Original design drawings and photos during construction.
Another possibility would be to contact Model Shipways, a division of Model Expo, and see if they can provide just the model plans.
All of the above probably have web sites, and Google might find them for you.
Happy modeling.
cool model and well done too
please see my website for some pride 2 photos
I also have some construction photos. I was shooting about every other day of the building process
good luck
Hello Bill,
I visited your site and greatly admire your photographic skills. The Pride story, both I and II, is amazing. I am guessing that you live in the Baltimore area and have a bit of salt water in your veins.
Thanks for your comment.
