They all leaned away

2

Obama with predecessorsThis photo was shamelessly snatched from Peggy Noonan’s latest opinion piece, Mere Presidents. In about two weeks we will be back to having only one President of the United States. I will miss this interregnum with its President for foreign policy and another for domestic policy. Strangely enough, it seems to work pretty well.

Ms. Noonan came up with this dandy quotable in her remarks about the recent photo op:

Did you notice how they all leaned away from Jimmy Carter, the official Cootieman of former presidents? It was like high-school students to the new girl: “You can’t sit here, we’re the Most Popular table.”

Henceforth I will always think of Jimmy Carter as the Cootieman.

Politics aside, I am praying that the governing combination of Executive and Congress somehow avoid being stampeded into opening the monetary flood-gates, which would seem guaranteed to do long-term damage to the country. Maybe the best thing that could happen would be gridlock while nature takes its course and begins its self healing process. I am not holding my breath.

Yes, we live in interesting times.

Dave, fascinated.

Carter as cootieman! He does seem rather marginalized in the photo, but his presidential era was quite a few years ago…

Carter has had an interesting post-presidential career, and he will long be remembered for the incident of the Threatening Rabbit.

“Quite a few years back”? I guess so, but he is still a living ex-president, and I’ll always remember him by his weird staff selections and his (meaning his administration’s) general incompetence in both domestic and foreign matters.

I also have opinions on his way of mixing his religious beliefs with his office as president, but I will not go there right now.

I figure if a guy is going to be president, he should expect to be measured against an impossibly high standard.
