Bugles II
If you happen to have your bugle handy and have a good lip, take a look at what wiki/bugle has to say, then give your favorite call a good riff. (You can read music, can you not?)
Many of the familiar calls have had words made up to fit the tune. For example, the US Reveille goes:
I can’t get ‘em up,
I can’t get ‘em up,
I can’t get ‘em up this morning;
I can’t get ‘em up,
I can’t get ‘em up,
I can’t get ‘em up at all!The corporal’s worse than the privates,
The sergeant’s worse than the corporals,
Lieutenant’s worse than the sergeants,
And the captain’s worst of all!< repeat top six lines >
and the US Mess Call:
Soupy, soupy, soupy, without a single bean!
Coffee, coffee, coffee, without a drop of cream!
Porky, porky, porky, without a streak of lean!and the US Assembly:
There’s a soldier in the grass
With a bullet up his ass
Take it out, take it out
Like a good Girl Scout!
For some reason the only one I remembered was the last.
Dave, who really should get off this kick and do something productive for a change.

Trolling through your articles and got a kick out of the bugle picture. Fred Layton gave Alex a bugle and it can be quite annoying. Somehow it survived the move here and we are frequently startled by Alex gaily blowing away, good lungs on that boy and he is starting to give out some clear notes. He has a fairly recognizable revelry in his attempts. I just hope no neighbors are in range!
A real bugle is a rarity, I think. Ask him to bring it to St. Louis for Christmas. I would like to hear him play it. I think.
