Ancient sound bite

1

On those few occasions when a sound bite is also an aphorism, it deserves a little good press. I can’t think of a current example, so here is a sound bite that is exactly 1600 years old:

For the good make use of this world in order to enjoy God, whereas the evil want to make use of God in order to enjoy the world — those of them, that is, who still believe in the existence of God, or in his concern for human affairs; those who do not believe even this are in a much worse case.

The context for this sound bite is a discussion of the offerings of Cain and Abel and the events that ensued, including a very interesting conversation between Cain and God. The quotation above was published by Augustine of Hippo in 410, City of God, Book XV, Chapter 8, but it could well have been written yesterday if the good Saint had not gotten there first.

Dave, not much given to either sound bite or aphorism.

Enjoyed the sound bite and even more so the explanation of ORLOP… being one to find such cozy places and think or just “waste time.” I love us “wasting time” to just enjoy God! And find myself wanting to do just that more and more! So thanks for the thought!
