Moon over New Brunswick

4

1st Qtr Moon Here is a portion of the 1st Qtr Moon as it appeared over the province of New Brunswick last night shortly after sunset. I wanted to show the whole Moon, but my limited skills with the My Telescope online telescope controls just wouldn’t let me do it, try as I might.

Look at those craters! Old Man Moon apparently was really pummeled by monstrous asteroids at one time. I understand that our planet earth also got its share of hits, but natural erosion has since erased many of the craters, and when Jupiter settled into its orbit, it swept most of those pesky rocks out of our way.

Dave, moonstruck as usual

Well, strange as it may seem, my family have also been staring at the moon; we’ve just acquired an C1800 Dollond (day and night, and with a 2 inch object lens). Not quite as clear as this, but it’s the same old moon, and just as marvellous.

Reminds me of the time I was travelling down a motorway, heading towards the most fantastic sunset. My companion broke a long silence with the memorable words, “clever how they do it, isn’t it?”

Clever, indeed! I wish you lots of enjoyment from the new telescope. The image above benefited from a little judicious editing with Photoshop Elements, another tool that I am trying to learn how to use.

What a great line, very clever God we have! As for your moon picture… it is so desolate looking with all those pocks.. I prefer the bright and shiny disc as seen with my naked eye, much more fanciful and elegant!

  4. Dave says:

If you prefer a bright and shiny disk (how boring), look up the next few nights as the moon approaches its full phase. Be careful, though, you might get moonstruck.
