Lent Day 34 — Believing Jesus

[38] Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. [39] Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” [40] Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” [41] So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. [42] I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” [43] When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” [44] The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” (John 11:38-44 ESV)

In this passage, Jesus, his disciples, Martha, and presumably Mary, family, and neighbors gather at Lazarus’ tomb. The stone sealing the tomb is removed, and Jesus called for Lazarus to come out. He did.

What do you make of that? A dead man lives and walks after four days in the tomb. Do you believe that?

It is a sad fact that many professing Christian men and women balk at Jesus’ miracles. If we are honest with ourselves, it is not the miracles of Jesus that can be a stumbling block to our faith, it is Jesus Christ himself. Christian faith has no meaning apart from the object of our faith – the God-man Jesus. Believing Jesus means believing his works. It’s an all or nothing deal.

When I struggle with accepting the truth of miracles, I will do well to learn from Jesus, for he is a gentle teacher (Matthew 11:28-30).

Reading and hearing the biblical account of Jesus’ path to the cross never fails to draw me in wonder to the God that I seek and so desperately need, and this includes believing miracles like the raising of Lazarus. Yes, Lord, I believe.
